DRAWING ON WORDS
The written word is used to
record ideas; text being a major source of
communication. All forms of art aim to speak to
an audience – whether through music, literature,
theatre, sculpture or painting. Indeed, many
artists have displayed more than one skill, for
example: William Blake was both poet and
printmaker; D. H. Lawrence also painted as well
as wrote.
I was influenced by street art
and graffiti, whose creators borrowed surfaces
that had been already designated for other use,
thus giving the impression of a very real human
presence; veritable cuckoos in the nest!
In creating this series -
‘Drawing on Words’, I have developed a weathered
patina by layering words and paint to indicate a
history of human use and activity, prior to my
final message; a message for the viewer to
ponder! |
